Retro Menage a trois!

No, we’re not talking about vintage porn, but the retro female trio that seems to be a formula for success these days. The following groups feature three girls singing cute, short songs about love, heartbreak, etc in nice, simple harmonies. It seems to us that having three distinct hair colors is also part of the formula…Revlon thanks you, girl group trios!

We featured The Pipettes last month, and these girls are our favorite of the bunch. They have a really nice organic sound, while maintaining a certain glamor and retro pop sound that makes them instantly likable. Hailing from Britain, they released their debut album in the US and have since become fairly popular. We’re proud to say we were fans from the beginning! They’re so cute that we can’t stand it sometimes!

The Revelations are also a pretty fun trio. A bit more polished and sexed up (see picture) than The Pipettes, they sound a lot like ABBA, almost too much so for comfort. They make it work though, and have a few nice pop gems. They entered It’s You in the 2008 Eurovision contest… it didn’t win for the UK, but it’s a winner in our books!

The Puppini Sisters are a bit quirkier than The Revelations or The Pipettes, and probably also a bit harder to like (not to mention they look mad old… they don’t touch the cuties in The Pipettes!). They have a real throwback sound (think Andrew Sisters) and they do lots of a capella covers of some recent hits, like Beyonce’s Crazy In Love. It clearly doesn’t touch Beyonce, but it’s fun. They kind of sound like a female barbershop group that might sing at a County Fair… if you’re into that, The Puppini Sisters are for you!
