Lucy’s 5 Cents: The-Dream
We tend to avoid cheezy RnB at all costs, but sometimes it’s just too hard… sigh! Here are two tracks from The-Dream, who released his debut album in December of 2007. Now, you might be thinking “There’s enough trashy RnB out there, no thank you.” (and believe us, we’re with you!!) but The-Dream was the producer of last year’s biggest single, and the biggest radio single in our recollection: Umbrella. That’s right, he penned Rihanna’s smash hit, which means you should at least give this guy a chance. He sounds a lot like Chris Brown, but perhaps not as endearing (did we just apply the adjective “endearing” to Chris Brown? No? Okay, that’s what we thought.)
Fast Car is a pretty cool sounding song with a nice beat (we’d like it more if it didn’t have the obligatory driving-car-as-sex metaphor) Livin’ A Lie is pretty nice too… on it, he teams up with Rihanna (reason enough to listen to the song). Apparently, Rihanna and The-Dream are, well, “livin’ a lie”… they say so 18 times in the song (yes, we counted).
PS. We’re not entirely sure what he’s doing with his shirt on the cover of his debut album, pictured above. We know you’ve come to expect life answers from us, but sometimes you just don’t know, yeah know?
PSS. We’ve heard of hyphenated last names, but hyphenated first names? You go, The-Dream!
