Sally’s Alley: Marina & the Diamonds

We’d like to introduce you all to Marina & The Diamonds, a wonderful new act we stumbled across the other day. Marina & The Diamonds has everything going for her: a name you feel like you’ve already heard lots and lots about, a sound reminiscent of every quirky/feisty/melodic/indie songstress of the last couple years, and a handful of incredibly poppy and fantastic songs floating out and about. Marina & The Diamonds doesn’t really feature any diamonds, just Marina from Wales, (kind of like Florence & the Machine, who is really just Florence…) and we’re loving what we’re hearing. Check out her MySpace.
Her debut single, Obsessions, reminds us a lot of Regina Spektor; it’s a jazzy, thumping, ditty with lots of potential for head-bopping and a super chorus. We like Obsessions, but we’re absolutely luvin’ I Am Not A Robot, which you can check out below. If this girl plays her cards right, she’ll be big fo’ sho’.

Marina and the Diamonds are the latest “and the” band, if indeed they are a band. Some of her/their songs are full-band performances even though on her MySpace, under “band members”, it simply says “me”. So we’re not sure who or what Marina’s Diamonds are, but then it took us quite a while to work out what Florence’s Machine was, let alone Joe Lean’s Jing Jang Jong.
