New single from Dirty Projectors – Stillness Is the Move

Dirty Projectors’ new album “Bitte Orca” isn’t set for release until June 9th, but it’s out and about on the internet now almost two months early, and while we’ve only given it a few listens, we’re dying to give it a few more — we’re absolutely loving what we’re hearing.

The lead single from the new album, Stillness Is the Move, due out April 21st, is a fantastic track, and somewhat of a new experience for us.  We never really got into any of their past stuff (we’ll be giving it all a good listen sometime soon though fo’ sho’) but NPR was pretty on point, describing their music as “a strange mating dance of controlled cacophony and catchy melody.”  The thing about a lot of their tunes, and certainly true of Stillness Is the Move, is this apparent lack of substantial melody, while producing this completely melodic sensation.  The female vocalists from Dirty Projectors, Amber and Angel, have these fantastic voices, dipped in honey and then rolled in sand, with this yelping harmonization that’s almost mesmerizing.  Props to frontman Dave Longstreth, this is some really fresh production.  We’ll get an album review up sometime soon.

Also check out their fantastic collabo with David Byrne from the “Dark Was the Night” compilation in support of AIDS awareness.
