The xx – Basic Space

Note: The xx, sounding better than they look.

It took us a while to come around to the sound of South London foursome The xx.  We listened to their greyish pop romp Crystalised when everyone was crazy for it a few months ago, but we just didn’t love it.  Last week, though, we grabbed their debut album “xx” (it dropped mid-August in the UK) and we’ve been spinning it since.  With a similar aesthetic to Bat For Lashes, The xx make soft, bleak tunes with a real pop/R&B sensibility (they do, after all, list their influences as Rihanna, Aaliyah, and Missy).  One of our favorite tracks on the album is Basic Space, also their new single – while it isn’t quite the hipster anthem Stillness Is The Move was, it certainly works with the same off-kilter-melodies and mesmerizing female vocals.

Grab their debut album when it drops in the US on October 20th.

Check out the video for Basic Space below, it reminds us a bit of Passion Pit’s Sleepyhead video.
