“Man On The Moon” from Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi’s debut album “Man On The Moon” leaked last week, but it officially drops next week, on Tuesday.  We’ve given it a few good spins already, but it’s such a completely rich album, so dense and stuffed with sounds we’ve never heard before, that we can’t really wrap our heads around it after only a few listens.  He has created such a distinct sound for himself, a new brand of alternative hip-hop, and it’s the freshness of his sound that makes it a bit hard for us to process.  We’ve all heard Day N Nite, Sky Might Fall, and Make Her Say, all of which are album standouts, and we’ve been consumed mostly with Acts 4 & 5 (the insanely old school slow jam Hyyerr and the feel good anthem Up, Up, And Away are amazing, as are his awesome collabos with Ratatat, on Alive and Pursuit of Happiness, which also features MGMT).   We do think, however, that Cudders succeeds equally on his lighter-hearted jams (Make Her Say & Up, Up, And Away have a sufficiently whimsical feel) than he does on his heavier songs (i.e., the rest of the album) that we almost wish the album featured a bit more of this quirkiness.  In any case, “Man On The Moon” proves Kid Cudi’s not just some buzz-child of Kanye but is also an up-and-coming heavy hitter in his own right.

Grab the album when it drops this Tuesday, September 15th!
