So it’s fall…

Above: A nondescript autumn tree.
It is today, October 1st. It doesn’t seem to me that I can say much about fall that hasn’t already been said – nothing about the changing colors of the leaves, and the trees eventual shedding, which is like dying, or growing old, and nothing about the ripeness of the pumpkins and squash in the dirt, nothing about harvesting, which is like collecting what is duly yours, the things you’ve worked hard for and deserve, nothing about the laziness of not-warm, but-really-not-very-cold afternoons, and how they stretch out and open like a hand for you to hold, nothing about the purple sky and how it looks at sunset against the oranges and reds of all the other things, nothing either about how the air in the morning feels a bit like family, like being in a car with your grandmother in the backseat (you in the backseat, of course), and certainly nothing about how being alone on a road in autumn doesn’t feel very much like being alone at all.
There is so much about autumn to like, it’s such a friendly time, in a way, like a cat, who comes and rubs his back against your leg and purrs – bad lovers though, are friends, and you’re looking for something more than a cat for your lap, we all are, and so I might be out of luck?

Thank you very much for the George Winston mp3. I’ve been listening to it a lot as it captures the bittersweet qualities of Autumn perfectly. Have a good weekend.
